I don’t remember how I happened upon the work of Sofia Sanchez & Mauro Mongiello. Regardless, the work of this once-married-now-best-of-friends, Argentinian duo has absolutely blown me away. Whether they are shooting studio portraits or environmental campaigns, they create photographs that are at once both quirky and incredibly sexy. I especially love how they use bold colors and dramatic shadows as graphic elements, that become integral to the success of the shot. Their actual shooting process is as unique as their style; both shoot during a session, trading off every few minutes to allow differing perspectives and points of view emerge. They discuss the shoot as it’s happening and even edit and post-process the images together where they almost always choose the same images as the standouts. Their unique partnership yields absolutely stunning images and has landed their work in top fashion magazines including Numero, where, for years, they have contributed many of the main fashion stories in nearly every issue.
